What's at stake: the governors' races

For the country

  • The governor signs or vetoes state laws, writes the state budget, runs state agencies, appoints officials and judges in many states, and in many states shapes how district maps are drawn.
  • Governors elected now will be in office for the 2028 presidential election and, in many states, for decisions about how votes are counted and certified.
  • Many will also shape the next round of redistricting after the 2030 census.
  • Midterms are usually read as a verdict on the sitting president, and the president's party has lost House seats in most midterms since World War II.

If Democrats win

  • Supporters say a Democratic governor would invest in public schools and expand health coverage.
  • They argue for protecting abortion access at the state level and raising wages.

If Republicans win

  • Supporters say a Republican governor would cut state income taxes and limit state spending.
  • They argue for school choice, public-safety funding and fewer business regulations.
