What's at stake: House control
For the country
- House members write the federal budget, start every tax bill and hold the power to impeach. Terms last two years.
- If Democrats win the House, they control the federal budget process in that chamber, can launch investigations and subpoena officials, and can block the President's legislation.
- If Republicans keep the House, along with the Senate, the President keeps unified control of Congress for the final two years of the term.
- Midterms are usually read as a verdict on the sitting president, and the president's party has lost House seats in most midterms since World War II.
If Democrats win
- Supporters say a Democratic House would act as a check on the President, with oversight and subpoena power.
- They argue for protecting Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security in budget talks.
If Republicans win
- Supporters say a Republican House would advance the President's agenda without gridlock.
- They argue for spending cuts, lower taxes and tougher immigration enforcement.
Arguments are summarised at party level from each side's stated priorities, not quotes from the candidates.
